This paper aims to (1) present the proportion of children with CP in Australia who have a recognized congenital anomaly (2) discuss the potential for improving the quality of these data by linking CP registers with congenital anomaly registers throughout Australia (3) discuss classification systems of congenital anomalies and (4) propose opportunities for preventing congenital anomalies on causal paths to CP and the next steps for such research. As the brain abnormality resulting in CP occurs prenatally for the majority, the aetiologies of CP and congenital anomalies can be anticipated to have some overlap. 1 There is no standard, universally accepted definition of a congenital anomaly, but all agree that the defining element is that the anomaly occurs before the end of pregnancy.

Congenital anomalies are equally diverse in their aetiology, type, and functional impact, ranging from a single minor anomaly such as a skin tag, to major and multiple anomalies such as anencephaly which are incompatible with extra-uterine life.

The aetiologies that are responsible for this lifelong disability can start at any time from conception through to 2В years of age. International Classification of DiseaseД¬erebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder of movement and posture, encompassing a wide range of aetiologies and variations in types of motor impairment, motor severity, associated impairments, and functional impact.Owing to the anticipated low prevalence of each subgroup, global collaboration will be required to further these lines of enquiry. It is anticipated that primary prevention of a small proportion of cases of CP is possible through the primary prevention of congenital anomalies, especially those due to teratogens. Systems have been developed to classify congenital anomalies into aetiologically related groups, but such a classification has yet to be trialled in CP. Historically in CP research, congenital anomalies have been classified by International Classification of Disease codes, then combined into brain and other major and minor anomalies. However, a lack of unified processes and definitions in congenital anomaly registers and data collections means that linkages are complex, need to be carefully planned, and limitations acknowledged. We have identified that CP registers often do not have quality data on congenital anomalies, necessitating linkage with congenital anomaly registers. The anomalies seen in CP are extremely variable. Proportions of cases of cerebral palsy (CP) with congenital anomalies recorded in Australian CP registers range from 15% to 40%.
